How the tile calculator works

Area divided by tile size, plus waste. The calculator takes your floor or wall area (minus doors and windows), divides by the area of one tile, then adds your waste allowance: 10% for a straight grid layout, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns where more cuts are needed.

Grout is estimated from tile size — smaller tiles have more grout lines per square foot, so they need more grout. One 25 lb bag covers about 200 sq ft of 12 inch tile. Keep one spare box of tile: shades vary between batches, and a future repair needs a matching tile.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles do I need for a 10x10 room?

A 10 ft x 10 ft room is 100 square feet. With 12x12 inch tiles (1 sq ft each) and 10% waste, you need 110 tiles. With 12x24 inch tiles (2 sq ft each), you need 55 tiles plus waste.

How much extra tile should I buy for waste?

Buy 10% extra for a straight grid layout, and 15% for a diagonal or herringbone pattern. Keep one spare box after the job for future repairs — tile batches vary in shade.

How much grout do I need?

As a rule of thumb, one 25 lb bag of grout covers about 200 square feet of 12 inch tile. Smaller tiles have more grout lines and need more grout; this calculator estimates from your tile size and area.

Do I count doors and windows in a wall tile area?

Measure the full wall, then subtract large openings like doors and windows. Small openings are usually left in — the tiles you cut around them count as waste anyway.
